How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
- Multiply: 0.56 × 10 = 5.6
- Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 10 × 100 = 56%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/10, so part = 56 × 10 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =56%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.6 is the 56% share of 10. The remaining 44% is 4.4, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 56% off an item priced $10 saves $5.6, so you pay $4.4.
Adding and taking away 56%
Increasing 10 by 56% gives 15.6 and decreasing it by 56% gives 4.4. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 6.864, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 56. 56% of 10 and 10% of 56 are always equal (both are 56 × 10 ÷ 100 = 5.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
