How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 800 = 80
- Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 800 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/800, so part = 10 × 800 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*800. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
80 is the 10% share of 800. The remaining 90% is 720, and the two parts add back up to 800.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $800 saves $80, so you pay $720.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 800 by 10% gives 880 and decreasing it by 10% gives 720. These do not cancel out: raising 800 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 792, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 800% of 10. 10% of 800 and 800% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 800 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
