How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 800 ÷ 100 = 8
- Multiply: 8 × 10 = 80
- Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 10 × 100 = 800%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 800/100 = part/10, so part = 800 × 10 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =800%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 800% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 10: it is 8 times 10.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 800% of its $10 cost means selling it for $80.
Adding and taking away 800%
Increasing 10 by 800% gives 90. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 800% and then lowering the result by 800% ends at -630, because the second 800% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 800. 800% of 10 and 10% of 800 are always equal (both are 800 × 10 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
