How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 94 = 9.4
- Check: Work backwards: 9.4 ÷ 94 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/94, so part = 10 × 94 ÷ 100 = 9.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*94. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.4 is the 10% share of 94. The remaining 90% is 84.6, and the two parts add back up to 94.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $94 saves $9.4, so you pay $84.6.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 94 by 10% gives 103.4 and decreasing it by 10% gives 84.6. These do not cancel out: raising 94 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 93.06, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
