How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 98 = 9.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.8 ÷ 98 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/98, so part = 10 × 98 ÷ 100 = 9.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.8 is the 10% share of 98. The remaining 90% is 88.2, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $98 saves $9.8, so you pay $88.2.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 98 by 10% gives 107.8 and decreasing it by 10% gives 88.2. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 97.02, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
