How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
  2. Multiply: 1.5 × 100 = 150
  3. Check: Work backwards: 150 ÷ 100 × 100 = 150%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 150/100 = part/100, so part = 150 × 100 ÷ 100 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =150%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 150% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 100: it is 1.5 times 100.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 150% of its $100 cost means selling it for $150.

Adding and taking away 150%

Increasing 100 by 150% gives 250. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 150% and then lowering the result by 150% ends at -125, because the second 150% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 150. 150% of 100 and 100% of 150 are always equal (both are 150 × 100 ÷ 100 = 150), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
