How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
- Multiply: 0.11 × 10 = 1.1
- Check: Work backwards: 1.1 ÷ 10 × 100 = 11%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/10, so part = 11 × 10 ÷ 100 = 1.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.1 is the 11% share of 10. The remaining 89% is 8.9, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 11% off an item priced $10 saves $1.1, so you pay $8.9.
Adding and taking away 11%
Increasing 10 by 11% gives 11.1 and decreasing it by 11% gives 8.9. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 9.879, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
