How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 4 = 0.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 4 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/4, so part = 12 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.48 is the 12% share of 4. The remaining 88% is 3.52, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $4 saves $0.48, so you pay $3.52.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 4 by 12% gives 4.48 and decreasing it by 12% gives 3.52. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 3.9424, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
