How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 75 = 9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 75 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/75, so part = 12 × 75 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9 is the 12% share of 75. The remaining 88% is 66, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $75 saves $9, so you pay $66.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 75 by 12% gives 84 and decreasing it by 12% gives 66. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 73.92, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
