How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 2 = 0.26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.26 ÷ 2 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/2, so part = 13 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.26 is the 13% share of 2. The remaining 87% is 1.74, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $2 saves $0.26, so you pay $1.74.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 2 by 13% gives 2.26 and decreasing it by 13% gives 1.74. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 1.9662, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
