How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 13 = 0.26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.26 ÷ 13 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/13, so part = 2 × 13 ÷ 100 = 0.26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.26 is the 2% share of 13. The remaining 98% is 12.74, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $13 saves $0.26, so you pay $12.74.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 13 by 2% gives 13.26 and decreasing it by 2% gives 12.74. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 12.9948, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
