How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 5 = 0.65
- Check: Work backwards: 0.65 ÷ 5 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/5, so part = 13 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.65 is the 13% share of 5. The remaining 87% is 4.35, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $5 saves $0.65, so you pay $4.35.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 5 by 13% gives 5.65 and decreasing it by 13% gives 4.35. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 4.9155, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
