How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 50 = 6.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/50, so part = 13 × 50 ÷ 100 = 6.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.5 is the 13% share of 50. The remaining 87% is 43.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $50 saves $6.5, so you pay $43.5.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 50 by 13% gives 56.5 and decreasing it by 13% gives 43.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 49.155, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
