How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 130 ÷ 100 = 1.3
  2. Multiply: 1.3 × 50 = 65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 65 ÷ 50 × 100 = 130%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 130/100 = part/50, so part = 130 × 50 ÷ 100 = 65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =130%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 130% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 50: it is 1.3 times 50.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 130% of its $50 cost means selling it for $65.

Adding and taking away 130%

Increasing 50 by 130% gives 115. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 130% and then lowering the result by 130% ends at -34.5, because the second 130% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 130. 130% of 50 and 50% of 130 are always equal (both are 130 × 50 ÷ 100 = 65), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
