How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 21 = 3.15
- Check: Work backwards: 3.15 ÷ 21 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/21, so part = 15 × 21 ÷ 100 = 3.15. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*21. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.15 is the 15% share of 21. The remaining 85% is 17.85, and the two parts add back up to 21.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $21 saves $3.15, so you pay $17.85.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 21 by 15% gives 24.15 and decreasing it by 15% gives 17.85. These do not cancel out: raising 21 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 20.5275, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
