How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 15 = 3.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.15 ÷ 15 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/15, so part = 21 × 15 ÷ 100 = 3.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.15 is the 21% share of 15. The remaining 79% is 11.85, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $15 saves $3.15, so you pay $11.85.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 15 by 21% gives 18.15 and decreasing it by 21% gives 11.85. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 14.3385, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
