How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 64 = 9.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 64 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/64, so part = 15 × 64 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.6 is the 15% share of 64. The remaining 85% is 54.4, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $64 saves $9.6, so you pay $54.4.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 64 by 15% gives 73.6 and decreasing it by 15% gives 54.4. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 62.56, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
