How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
- Multiply: 0.64 × 15 = 9.6
- Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 15 × 100 = 64%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/15, so part = 64 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =64%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.6 is the 64% share of 15. The remaining 36% is 5.4, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 64% off an item priced $15 saves $9.6, so you pay $5.4.
Adding and taking away 64%
Increasing 15 by 64% gives 24.6 and decreasing it by 64% gives 5.4. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 8.856, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 15% of 64. 64% of 15 and 15% of 64 are always equal (both are 64 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
