How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 100 = 16
- Check: Work backwards: 16 ÷ 100 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/100, so part = 16 × 100 ÷ 100 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
16 is the 16% share of 100. The remaining 84% is 84, and the two parts add back up to 100.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $100 saves $16, so you pay $84.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 100 by 16% gives 116 and decreasing it by 16% gives 84. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 97.44, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
