How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 7 = 1.12
- Check: Work backwards: 1.12 ÷ 7 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/7, so part = 16 × 7 ÷ 100 = 1.12. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.12 is the 16% share of 7. The remaining 84% is 5.88, and the two parts add back up to 7.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $7 saves $1.12, so you pay $5.88.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 7 by 16% gives 8.12 and decreasing it by 16% gives 5.88. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 6.8208, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
