How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 16 = 2.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.72 ÷ 16 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/16, so part = 17 × 16 ÷ 100 = 2.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.72 is the 17% share of 16. The remaining 83% is 13.28, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $16 saves $2.72, so you pay $13.28.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 16 by 17% gives 18.72 and decreasing it by 17% gives 13.28. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 15.5376, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
