How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 30 = 5.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.4 ÷ 30 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/30, so part = 18 × 30 ÷ 100 = 5.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.4 is the 18% share of 30. The remaining 82% is 24.6, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $30 saves $5.4, so you pay $24.6.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 30 by 18% gives 35.4 and decreasing it by 18% gives 24.6. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 29.028, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
