How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 40 = 7.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/40, so part = 18 × 40 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.2 is the 18% share of 40. The remaining 82% is 32.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $40 saves $7.2, so you pay $32.8.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 40 by 18% gives 47.2 and decreasing it by 18% gives 32.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 38.704, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
