How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
- Multiply: 0.18 × 8 = 1.44
- Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 8 × 100 = 18%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/8, so part = 18 × 8 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =18%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.44 is the 18% share of 8. The remaining 82% is 6.56, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 18% off an item priced $8 saves $1.44, so you pay $6.56.
Adding and taking away 18%
Increasing 8 by 18% gives 9.44 and decreasing it by 18% gives 6.56. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 7.7408, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
