How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 2 = 0.04
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.04 ÷ 2 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/2, so part = 2 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.04. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.04 is the 2% share of 2. The remaining 98% is 1.96, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $2 saves $0.04, so you pay $1.96.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 2 by 2% gives 2.04 and decreasing it by 2% gives 1.96. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 1.9992, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 2. 2% of 2 and 2% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.04), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
