How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 20 = 0.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.4 ÷ 20 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/20, so part = 2 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.4 is the 2% share of 20. The remaining 98% is 19.6, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $20 saves $0.4, so you pay $19.6.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 20 by 2% gives 20.4 and decreasing it by 2% gives 19.6. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 19.992, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 2. 2% of 20 and 20% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
