How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 32 = 0.64
- Check: Work backwards: 0.64 ÷ 32 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/32, so part = 2 × 32 ÷ 100 = 0.64. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.64 is the 2% share of 32. The remaining 98% is 31.36, and the two parts add back up to 32.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $32 saves $0.64, so you pay $31.36.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 32 by 2% gives 32.64 and decreasing it by 2% gives 31.36. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 31.9872, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 32% of 2. 2% of 32 and 32% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 32 ÷ 100 = 0.64), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
