How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 38 = 0.76
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.76 ÷ 38 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/38, so part = 2 × 38 ÷ 100 = 0.76. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*38. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.76 is the 2% share of 38. The remaining 98% is 37.24, and the two parts add back up to 38.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $38 saves $0.76, so you pay $37.24.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 38 by 2% gives 38.76 and decreasing it by 2% gives 37.24. These do not cancel out: raising 38 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 37.9848, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
