How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 5 = 0.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.1 ÷ 5 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/5, so part = 2 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.1 is the 2% share of 5. The remaining 98% is 4.9, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $5 saves $0.1, so you pay $4.9.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 5 by 2% gives 5.1 and decreasing it by 2% gives 4.9. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 4.998, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 5% of 2. 2% of 5 and 5% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.1), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
