How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 67 = 1.34
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.34 ÷ 67 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/67, so part = 2 × 67 ÷ 100 = 1.34. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*67. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.34 is the 2% share of 67. The remaining 98% is 65.66, and the two parts add back up to 67.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $67 saves $1.34, so you pay $65.66.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 67 by 2% gives 68.34 and decreasing it by 2% gives 65.66. These do not cancel out: raising 67 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 66.9732, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
