How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 49 = 9.8
- Check: Work backwards: 9.8 ÷ 49 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/49, so part = 20 × 49 ÷ 100 = 9.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*49. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.8 is the 20% share of 49. The remaining 80% is 39.2, and the two parts add back up to 49.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $49 saves $9.8, so you pay $39.2.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 49 by 20% gives 58.8 and decreasing it by 20% gives 39.2. These do not cancel out: raising 49 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 47.04, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
