How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
- Multiply: 0.49 × 20 = 9.8
- Check: Work backwards: 9.8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 49%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/20, so part = 49 × 20 ÷ 100 = 9.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
