How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 64 = 12.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.8 ÷ 64 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/64, so part = 20 × 64 ÷ 100 = 12.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.8 is the 20% share of 64. The remaining 80% is 51.2, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $64 saves $12.8, so you pay $51.2.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 64 by 20% gives 76.8 and decreasing it by 20% gives 51.2. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 61.44, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
