How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 7 = 1.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.4 ÷ 7 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/7, so part = 20 × 7 ÷ 100 = 1.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.4 is the 20% share of 7. The remaining 80% is 5.6, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $7 saves $1.4, so you pay $5.6.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 7 by 20% gives 8.4 and decreasing it by 20% gives 5.6. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 6.72, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 7% of 20. 20% of 7 and 7% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 7 ÷ 100 = 1.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
