How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
- Multiply: 0.07 × 20 = 1.4
- Check: Work backwards: 1.4 ÷ 20 × 100 = 7%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/20, so part = 7 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =7%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.4 is the 7% share of 20. The remaining 93% is 18.6, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 7% off an item priced $20 saves $1.4, so you pay $18.6.
Adding and taking away 7%
Increasing 20 by 7% gives 21.4 and decreasing it by 7% gives 18.6. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 19.902, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 7. 7% of 20 and 20% of 7 are always equal (both are 7 × 20 ÷ 100 = 1.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
