How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 15 = 3.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.45 ÷ 15 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/15, so part = 23 × 15 ÷ 100 = 3.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.45 is the 23% share of 15. The remaining 77% is 11.55, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $15 saves $3.45, so you pay $11.55.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 15 by 23% gives 18.45 and decreasing it by 23% gives 11.55. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 14.2065, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
