How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 40 = 9.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/40, so part = 23 × 40 ÷ 100 = 9.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.2 is the 23% share of 40. The remaining 77% is 30.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $40 saves $9.2, so you pay $30.8.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 40 by 23% gives 49.2 and decreasing it by 23% gives 30.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 37.884, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
