How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 15 = 3.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 15 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/15, so part = 24 × 15 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.6 is the 24% share of 15. The remaining 76% is 11.4, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $15 saves $3.6, so you pay $11.4.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 15 by 24% gives 18.6 and decreasing it by 24% gives 11.4. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 14.136, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
