How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 14 = 3.5
- Check: Work backwards: 3.5 ÷ 14 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/14, so part = 25 × 14 ÷ 100 = 3.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.5 is the 25% share of 14. The remaining 75% is 10.5, and the two parts add back up to 14.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $14 saves $3.5, so you pay $10.5.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 14 by 25% gives 17.5 and decreasing it by 25% gives 10.5. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 13.125, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
