How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 160 = 40
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 160 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/160, so part = 25 × 160 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*160. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40 is the 25% share of 160. The remaining 75% is 120, and the two parts add back up to 160.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $160 saves $40, so you pay $120.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 160 by 25% gives 200 and decreasing it by 25% gives 120. These do not cancel out: raising 160 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 150, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 160% of 25. 25% of 160 and 160% of 25 are always equal (both are 25 × 160 ÷ 100 = 40), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
