How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 56 = 14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 56 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/56, so part = 25 × 56 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14 is the 25% share of 56. The remaining 75% is 42, and the two parts add back up to 56.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $56 saves $14, so you pay $42.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 56 by 25% gives 70 and decreasing it by 25% gives 42. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 52.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
