How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
- Multiply: 0.56 × 25 = 14
- Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 25 × 100 = 56%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/25, so part = 56 × 25 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =56%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
14 is the 56% share of 25. The remaining 44% is 11, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 56% off an item priced $25 saves $14, so you pay $11.
Adding and taking away 56%
Increasing 25 by 56% gives 39 and decreasing it by 56% gives 11. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 17.16, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
