How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 100 = 28
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28 ÷ 100 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/100, so part = 28 × 100 ÷ 100 = 28. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28 is the 28% share of 100. The remaining 72% is 72, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $100 saves $28, so you pay $72.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 100 by 28% gives 128 and decreasing it by 28% gives 72. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 92.16, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
