How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 25 = 0.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/25, so part = 3 × 25 ÷ 100 = 0.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.75 is the 3% share of 25. The remaining 97% is 24.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $25 saves $0.75, so you pay $24.25.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 25 by 3% gives 25.75 and decreasing it by 3% gives 24.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 24.9775, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
