How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 30 = 0.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.9 ÷ 30 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/30, so part = 3 × 30 ÷ 100 = 0.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.9 is the 3% share of 30. The remaining 97% is 29.1, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $30 saves $0.9, so you pay $29.1.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 30 by 3% gives 30.9 and decreasing it by 3% gives 29.1. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 29.973, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
