How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 40 = 1.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/40, so part = 3 × 40 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.2 is the 3% share of 40. The remaining 97% is 38.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $40 saves $1.2, so you pay $38.8.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 40 by 3% gives 41.2 and decreasing it by 3% gives 38.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 39.964, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
