How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 65 = 1.95
- Check: Work backwards: 1.95 ÷ 65 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/65, so part = 3 × 65 ÷ 100 = 1.95. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.95 is the 3% share of 65. The remaining 97% is 63.05, and the two parts add back up to 65.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $65 saves $1.95, so you pay $63.05.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 65 by 3% gives 66.95 and decreasing it by 3% gives 63.05. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 64.9415, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
