How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 300 ÷ 100 = 3
  2. Multiply: 3 × 100 = 300
  3. Check: Work backwards: 300 ÷ 100 × 100 = 300%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 300/100 = part/100, so part = 300 × 100 ÷ 100 = 300. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =300%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 300% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 100: it is 3 times 100.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 300% of its $100 cost means selling it for $300.

Adding and taking away 300%

Increasing 100 by 300% gives 400. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 300% and then lowering the result by 300% ends at -800, because the second 300% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 300. 300% of 100 and 100% of 300 are always equal (both are 300 × 100 ÷ 100 = 300), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
