How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 300 ÷ 100 = 3
- Multiply: 3 × 40 = 120
- Check: Work backwards: 120 ÷ 40 × 100 = 300%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 300/100 = part/40, so part = 300 × 40 ÷ 100 = 120. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =300%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 300% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 40: it is 3 times 40.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 300% of its $40 cost means selling it for $120.
Adding and taking away 300%
Increasing 40 by 300% gives 160. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 300% and then lowering the result by 300% ends at -320, because the second 300% is taken of a bigger number.
