How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 13 = 4.03
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.03 ÷ 13 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/13, so part = 31 × 13 ÷ 100 = 4.03. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.03 is the 31% share of 13. The remaining 69% is 8.97, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $13 saves $4.03, so you pay $8.97.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 13 by 31% gives 17.03 and decreasing it by 31% gives 8.97. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 11.7507, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
